RENOVATION AND MAINTENANCE WORK AT CAS.

CAS offices and House of Refuge are located at Lartebiokorshie- Accra. The compound contains a main building- (Refuge/offices), a library and a general handicraft workshop as well as boys- quarters. The main building is a two storey building.

Behind the main building, some containers which contain a store and a handicraft shop. Opposite these containers are two bathrooms and a toilet for the children.

The main building is quite old but CAS renovated it in 1999 during the time we moved from Jamestown to Lartebiokorshie.

These buildings as well as the compound walls have to be maintained annually. Children play football in the compound and often louvers break or walls are damaged.

CAS applied to a Dutch organisation, Vincentius Vereniging in Schijndel, The Netherlands. They approved the main part of our maintenance plan and financed it.

"Milson Construction Works" repaired and painted the walls. Repairs louvers and mosquito netting.

We are very grateful.

THE PROGRESS REPORT ON THE RABBIT AT HOPELAND ASHAIMAN

Dominic Asibi fifteen years old boy, one of our sponsored children currently attending Adjei Kojo primary school within the Ashaiman Municipality is in charge of these rabbits at the center. In March 2010, the farm Manager, Mr. Azaar bought twelve rabbits 8 females (doe) and 4 male ( buck) to begin with, however 6 died later, leaving 6 (2 bucks and 4 doe).

With good and proper care by Asibi, we currently have 27 young ones. According to Dominic feeding them is the main problem, they enjoy fresh grass a lot but it is not easy to get it always so they are fed on chicken feeds (wheat brain and corn) sometimes.

For him he is happy to be responsible for the rabbits and it had given him the opportunity to know more about rabbits rearing; and not only that but also the hope and confidence that he could be responsible for this and other lives in future.

END OF YEAR PARTY FOR STAFF

CAS management and staff find time at the end of each year to relax and reflect on the past years activities .At the end of last year 2010 we find ourselves at the Tesono Sports Club where we shared a few bottles of drinks and did some dancing. Here are some pictures on that occassion. What a moment it was. The staff were very grateful to management and wish for a better working year 2011.

A DRAMA PREFORMANCE AT THE THREE NORTHERN REGIONS

The Ricerca Cooperazione (RC) in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare(DSW), Catholic Action for Street children (CAS) and Street Girls Aid (S.AID) embarked on a trip to the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions of Ghana to perform a drama titled 'STREET IS LONDON' from Friday 10th to Saturday 18th of December 2010.
The main purpose was to educate and discourage both parents and children from coming to the southern part of the country in search of non existing jobs. The trip was financed and organized by Ricerca. Some members from the Head office of Ricerca- Italy came to Ghana and accompanied them to the northern regions.

DEVELOPMENTS AT CAS

. “Out of school children” are welcome to visit the House of Refuge at Lartebiokorshie-Accra. The Refuge is their home but they have to obey the rules. Those who want to leave the streets have to be “prepared”. This means they have to learn how to behave, how to take care of them-selves, but most of all to learn to listen to the “teacher”. This is easier said than done. Many children have been born on the streets. Their parents are persons living in the street themselves. Therefore they have had little time to bring up and educate their child. At the Refuge, all workers become father or mother to the children. Teenage mothers have to learn how to take care of their babies.

However, the House of Refuge is not a school although certain lessons as literacy, mathematics and life skills are taught. In addition many different lessons can be followed such as: drawing, computer, drama, sports and music. Also the demonstration department introduces trades to the children.

In order to have a collective approach, CAS chooses every week a Theme and during the lessons, this theme features as the main topic. For instance; if the theme is “cooperation” then the children are taught the meaning of this word during the literacy classes. They are taught how to cooperate during the sport activities they can stage a drama using this word or make a drawing about it. In effect, the Theme as a topic is demonstrated or practiced in various ways.

All members of staff use the same theme during the activities. On Fridays, the children will be able to show what they have learnt during the performances. Either they show the drama or they sing about it. The theme can again be used in a quiz contest.

This new method has been adapted since the beginning of 2010. It is a method of repetition and a method to introduce a bit of the English language to the children. CAS is of the opinion that all children should learn this language in order to be able to obtain a job at a later stage.

Not all children are interested to learn at the classroom level. They are either interested in sports or caring of babies, acting or making music. CAS has introduced a shorter sponsorship package for these children. Staff at the Refuge can introduce these activities and decide where they can follow a short course on it. Definitely, these courses do not have to last three years. The basic skills have to be learnt and the rest demonstrated during the practical period.

We hope that by introducing these lessons more children can be interested to leave the streets.
