The out of school children population is very large in the Greater Accra Region. This group consists of: - Typical street children of whom many are migrants from towns and villages of all regions of Ghana and surrounding countries.
- Urban poor children- children of poor families who do not go to school. Also included are the second and third generations of street children who live with their mothers in kiosks.
- Working children – children who do not go to school but instead are the breadwinners of the family.
The Department of Social Welfare has ten districts in the Greater Accra Region. In each district different kind of children can be met. The fieldworkers conduct group education exercises. Selected themes are used so that children are educated on various issues. These include health, life skills as well as social issues. The workers first have to know who they are dealing with and therefore individual interaction is very important. They teach children how to behave, speak to an adult and take care of themselves.
The fieldworkers will visit all the districts a few times in order to gather data on the different problems so that eventually they can assist the social workers of the DSW in the various districts. The fieldwork department is the link between the children and CAS. Most of the children can be met in the streets. Therefore the workers should be abreast with all developments in the streets. Special researc hes have to be conducted on new developments so that all can be informed. For instance; Children had different survival techniques ten years ago than today. We want to know how the children organize their lives and what their values are.CAS is aware that many children leave certain towns and villages for unknown reasons. We can read this in the many social survey reports CAS has. CAS intends to visit some of these places so that a better understanding can be established as why children drift to the city.
